Abstract:

Objective

To investigate the clinical effect of N-acetylcyeteine in patients with chronic pneumonia, and explore a new approach of treatment to chronic pneumonia.

Methods

A total of 54 patients with chronic pneumonia were recruited into this study from the First Affiliated Hospital of Hainan Medical University between January 2012 and December 2015, and randomly divided into the following four groups: group A(n=11) received N-acetylcyeteine 0.6 g a day, group B(n=13) received N-acetylcyeteine 1.2 g a day, group C(n=15) received N-acetylcyeteine 1.8 g a day and group D(n=15) received without medication(control group). The patients were monitored monthly for 24 weeks. A complete blood count, blood chemistries, SpO2 and chest CT were recorded before and after therapy. In addition, chest CT was performed at week 4 and week 12.

Results

In comparation with the contrast group or group A, group B or group C could effectively decrease CT scores in patients with chronic pneumonia (P<0.05). But there was no significant difference between group B and group C(P=0.42).

Conclusion

Oral N-acetylcysteine can be used in chronic pneumonia. Recommended dosage of N-acetylcysteine in patients with chronic pneumonia is 1.2 g or 1.8 g a day for 24 week.
